Floor underlayment is a general term that describes a piece of material that sits on top of the subfloor and underneath the finish floor.
Pads can perform one or more functions, depending on the materials they are composed of.
- Foam and cork underlayments are great for soundproofing and make the floor feel softer while also providing a small amount of insulation.
Impermeable or semipermeable underlayments, also known as vapor barriers, are ideal for preventing water from reaching the bottom of your finished floor to protect it from damage.
